Westville School District End of the Year Plan

Dear Westville School Community,

The following plan is a guide for the remainder of the school year and how it will unfold under the current Remote Learning process that limits in-person interactions.  Please understand that there are many factors that had to be considered in developing this plan such as: public safety, academic needs, cultural traditions like graduation and prom, as well as many others issues.  Ultimately there are no “perfect” solutions for these unprecedented times.

With that said, the following plan will help outline what the process will look like for the rest of the school year.  Please understand this plan will have to remain flexible to allow for new information and appropriate responses as the situation with the public health crisis continues.

Each week the district will provide more details about each upcoming event and how the process will play out.  This document may not resolve every question right now about the end of the school year, but should be a good frame of reference about how and when future information will be released.

In the meantime, specific questions should be addressed to the building principals at each school or the superintendent.  Email or phone calls will be the best way to communicate.  The district Facebook page will continue to be used to “push” information out, but it is NOT a good place to pose questions for a district response.

Graduating Seniors

Graduation – the graduation commencement ceremony is the culmination of every graduating student’s high school career.  Although this current health crisis has disrupted school normalcy, Westville High School will conduct a graduation program that is safe and significant for the Class of 2020.  There are two plans that district has put into place to accomplish this:

Plan #1 – the first priority is to have a live graduation ceremony where students and family members participate in person.  At this time the current date for graduation (May 17) has been postponed due to the restrictions in place.  If restrictions are relaxed to allow for an in-person graduation event before July 13, ceremony will be announced and all graduating seniors will have an opportunity to participate if they choose.  Due to anticipated construction at WHS and WJHS a final location and time will be determined if an in-person ceremony is an option.

Plan #2 – in order to have an alternative back-up to a live graduation ceremony, the district will be conducting a recorded graduation ceremony for all graduating seniors.  This video compilation will be produced in a way to highlight every participating senior in a way that captures the significance of their accomplishment.  In the event an in-person graduation ceremony is not possible to accomplish prior to July 13 all students will be provided access to the video for viewing and celebration with their families.  In the event a live ceremony can take place, the video would still be released to capture the unique circumstances of this year’s ceremony.  The filming of the graduation would begin the week of May 18 with details to be provided closer to that date, if an in person graduation event has not been scheduled.

At the conclusion of Remote Learning for the 2019-20 school year all graduating seniors will be provided access to their normal high school transcript and diploma.  Participation in any graduation ceremony will be completely voluntary for students.  Students who choose to go through any graduation ceremony will required to follow the protocol and procedures that reflect the significance of this special annual event.

DACC Registration for Seniors Enrolling in DACC – graduating seniors who are intending to enroll at DACC should begin the registration process on Monday April 20.  DACC will be setting up individual phone appointments for all student registrations.  It is recommended to email a request to set up an appointment and follow up with a phone call thereafter.  Expect some delays as DACC is working to register all Vermilion County students through this method due to the quarantine.  After an appointment has been set up with DACC contact Mr. Waters the WHS guidance counselor at watersm@gowestville.org and he will make arrangements for student records to be sent to DACC.

DACC Counseling Contact = Jessica Aquino  Phone= 443-8750  Email = jaquino3@dacc.edu

Senior Trip – due to the mandated stay at home closure the current senior trip date of May has been postponed.  When or if safety guidance allows for conducting a trip safely, an alternative date will be announced.  If there is not the means to conduct a senior trip safely before the end of the current school year, the senior trip would be canceled for the 2019-20 school year and money raised for the trip would be used to uniquely recognize of the class of 2020.

All Westville High School Students

Locker Clear Out – during the week of April 27 arrangements will be made for students to empty their lockers, PE lockers, return textbooks not needed for remote learning, spring sport uniforms, and band instruments.  A process will be put into place so that a limited number of students would be in the building at any given time over the course of a few days.

Dual Enrollment Registration for WHS Students – students who intend to take DACC dual credit courses may begin the registration process on Monday April 20 by following the instructions below:

Go to the DACC website at www.dacc.edu

On their webpage hover over the section labeled “Academics”

After the drop down, click on the section labeled “Course Schedules”

Click on Course and Sections for “2020 Summer Only” or “2020 Fall Only”

  1. Enter course information on a WHS Dual Enrollment form located at https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/673407/Dual_Enrollment_Registration_Form_Summer_2020_and_Fall_2020.pdf
  2. You will need two forms if you are registering for summer and fall
  3. Students registering for fall must remember to sign up for a minimum of two classes (Mon/Wed/Fri) and (Tues/Thur)
  4. Most students schedule dual credit courses during second or third block.
  5. Course times may not match exactly for the two classes, but should be close.  For example, a (M/W/F) class may meet from 10:00 -10:50 and a corresponding (Tues/Thur) class may meet 9:30 – 10:45.
  6. Students need to complete the WHS Dual Enrollment form (one for summer, one for fall) and return to Mr. Waters or Ms. Hull for final approval.  Students can type their information into each form, save the form, and then email it to Mr. Waters or Ms. Hull.  Students may also print off a hard copy of the form, fill it out, and return it during food distribution (Mondays between 2 – 3PM at WHS).
  7. Once approved WHS will send registration information to DACC
  8. DACC will send a confirmation letter to students with a report of fees owed.
  9. Remember – tuition fees will be paid by Westville School District and course fees, books, and lab fees are paid by the student.
