Westville School Community,

Very recently the mitigation issues related to Region 6 (Vermilion County) have improved so that certain extra-curricular opportunities will be allowed to resume.  The district administrative team, athletic directors, and coaches are working on a plan to resume activities on our students based on these guidelines and the governing sports associations for respective schools (IESA and IHSA).  The following is a general description of how each school is planning in response.

Judith Giacoma Elementary School

Over the next nine weeks Giacoma elementary will be running three short activity periods that will provide some opportunities for 5th and 6th grade students to participate in some basketball and volleyball activities.  The primary focus of these activities will be some guided practice time, basic drills, and open gyms so the kids have a chance to play amongst each other.  There will not be intramural games, but there will be opportunities for kids to participate each week.

Giacoma Girls Basketball

January 25 thru February 11

Monday 25 – Thursday 3:30 – 5pm

Fifth Grade Practice Times 3:30-5pm on the following days

January 25, 27

February 1, 3, 8, 10

Sixth Grade Practice Times 3:30-5pm on the following days

January 26, 28

February 2, 4, 9, 11

Depending on the number of students participating practices may end up being combined.  This decision will be made when coaches have a better understanding of the number of participants and what can be done while maintaining appropriate safety protocols.

Coaches and players will be required to wear face masks while indoors for practice activities.

Remote students are welcome to participate and report to the first practice.

Contact Coach Heath if you have any questions heathj@gowestville.org

Giacoma Boys Basketball

February 16 thru March 4

Monday – Thursday 3:30 – 5pm

Depending on the number of students participating 5th and 6th grade may need to practice separately.

Giacoma Volleyball

March 8 thru March 25

Monday – Thursday 3:30 – 5pm

Depending on the number of students participating 5th and 6th grade may need to practice separately.  This decision will be made when coaches have a better understanding of the number of participants and what can be done while maintaining appropriate safety protocols.

Coaches and players will be required to wear face masks while indoors for practice activities.

Remote students are welcome to participate and report to the first practice.

Giacoma Boys and Girls Track

Giacoma 5th  and 6th students are eligible to compete with the WJHS track team.  The WJHS track season will begin on Monday March 1.  Arrangements will be made with the individual 5th  and 6th grade student interested in participating in the WJHS track season as the season gets closer to work around the Giacoma boys’ basketball period and girls’ volleyball period.

Remote students will be welcome to participate in track.

Westville Junior High School

The IESA has resumed the junior high school volleyball season effective immediately, so WJHS is currently making arrangements to start practices and initiate the season.   The IESA does have a board of directors meeting on January 27, but the current thinking is that their meeting is unlikely to impact volleyball to a great extent and that the normal spring track season should run fairly close to normal.

WJHS Girls Volleyball

Practice and tryouts will begin Monday January 25.

Tryout Schedule

Eighth Grade will be January 25 and 26 from 3:30 – 5:20pm

Seventh Grade will be January 25 and 26 from 5:40 – 7:30pm

Further information on tryouts will be provided to students at school, emailed home to remote learners, and/or provided at the first practice.  Practice times will generally follow this schedule.  Seventh and eighth grade may combine practices after the tryout portion of the season has concluded and numbers allow.  If you have questions please contact head coach Caleb Stephenson at stephensonc@gowestville.org

Important notes about the upcoming season

Remote students are welcome to participate.

Coaches and players will be required to wear face masks while indoors for practice activities.

In order to maintain social distancing and ensure safety protocols that will allow this season to continue, spectators will not be allowed to attend home games.  It is anticipated that many (if not all) opposing schools will be enacting similar policies.

Arrangements will be made so that there is a live broad cast of each game (home and away) so that spectators may follow the action.

Students will be required to ride the bus to and from each away game.

WJHS Boys Basketball

Unfortunately, basketball is a sport that has not yet been cleared for game competition between schools.  The coaches will be working around the volleyball schedule when gym time is available to provide some open gym time for boys basketball to practice, get in some drills, and scrimmage.  More details will be provided after the WJHS volleyball schedule is formalized.

WJHS Boys and Girls Track

The WJHS track season will begin on Monday March 1.  Arrangements will be made with girls volleyball players interested in participating in the WJHS track season as the season gets closer to work around the volleyball schedule.  After spring break there should not be any conflicts.

WHS Sports

Currently the high school is awaiting a meeting by the IHSA board of directors scheduled on January 27 to get a clearer direction on what high school sports may be offered this spring.  After that meeting appropriate plans will be made accordingly.  In the meantime, the weight room is open daily after school until 3pm.  The WHS sports that would have been in season right now (boys and girls basketball) will be scheduling some open gym activities as the school awaits word from the IHSA about the rest of the spring.  Look for more information in the near future.  If you have questions please contact girls basketball coach Nathan West westn@gowestville.org or boys basketball coach Andrew Arteaga arteagaa@gowestville.org

Conclusion

The district is excited to see more opportunities being made available to our students.  Please be patient and flexible as we continue to work with IESA, IHSA, and the local health agencies that are all working to find solutions as we move forward.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of our building principals for assistance.

Thank you
