Westville Parents and School Community,
Westville School District is providing opportunities to increase access to teaching and learning by hosting summer school for district students. The pandemic has created many obstacles for our students and this summer school opportunity will be a chance to reinforce academic learning, make up credits for courses where students have struggled, and provide enrichment opportunities. To assist in our summer school planning, we are asking parents to complete a short summer school survey so we can gauge interest and potential participation.
Summer School Dates
Tentatively the approach would be to run a program that would essentially just extend the current school year through the month of June. The tentative start date for a program like this would be May 26 and run through July 2.
Daily Schedule for Summer School
The tentative schedule would be for half day student attendance from approximately 8AM - 12:30PM with breakfast and lunch provided.
Academic Approach for Summer School
The tentative academic approach would be to present an entirely teacher driven program (i.e. no remote instruction, no Edgenuity programs, and much more traditional in how we conduct school – with COVID safeguards in place as appropriate).
It is assumed that many of the potential students at the junior high and high school level may participate for remediation purposes (making up credits), while the approach for elementary may be more supplemental and enrichment oriented (provide students opportunities to learn skills and address gaps that we know will exist from the pandemic).
Transportation is an issue that would need to be considered based on the number of students participating, the number of students who would require transportation, and economic feasibility.
To reiterate planning for summer school is still in the early stages and the final plan could look slightly different from what has been described.
